Many Have Transgressed

Many Have Transgressed
Ezra 10:13-14 NKJV
[13] But there are many people; it is the season for heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for there are many of us who have transgressed in this matter. [14] Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter.”

It had become popular to marry non Israelite contrary to the original  instructions commanded. In Deut. 7: 3-4, Isaac had given instructions not to intermarry with the Canaanites who sorrounded them lest they become corrupted by them. Here's someone's observation: " Isaac and Rebekah were grieved when their son Esau married the Hittite daughters and told Jacob to not marry a Canaanite or Hittite woman just like what his twin brother did and instead go to his uncle Laban's house and so he ended up marrying his two cousins".
The departure from that original instructions brought the people to our read today. The mistakes had to be corrected. This matter was not a racial issue. It was ideological. Such marriage  would expose them to points of contention or debate that stems from deeply held beliefs, values, or philosophies, rather than from obeying  simple practical instructions.
In the New Testament , we've already pointed out that the same principle still operates. The Word discourages Christians from marrying non-believers, emphasizing the importance of being united with someone who shares faith and beliefs. 2 Cor.6:14-16 speaks of being "unequally yoked" and finding fellowship in light and righteousness, not darkness and unrighteousness.
Note the saying that many have transgressed. That means many had gone beyond the instructions. It may look hard by today's standards, but God is serious about His instructions to us. Do not marry an unbeliever. Period . Good morning.
